When I first stepped into the marl around these mangroves, it reminded me of all the times I had slogged around the lakes in Iowa as I was growing up. It is a strange feeling. You think you are going to sink in up to your knees but instead you are standing in what seems like a shallow bowl with large chunks of cottage cheese. It is easier to move around in there than along the shoreline where it is lined with thick oozy mud. When I arrived before sunrise this morning, I realized I was going to have to go in if I was going to come up with any sort of composition.

The fog was pretty thick as I searched for my shot and I had to pay attention to the fact that soon the sun would work its way up over the horizon. I danced around this particularly shapely red mangrove for a while and settled for this composition just as the sun glowed through the fog. It wasn’t the spectacular cloud bank I had wished for but it did make for a very subtle and serene image.
